Kwita Izina ,which literally translates to ‘Give a name’, is named after the ancestral baby naming ceremony that happened after the birth of a newborn. The baby gorillas that were born within the last year are given names at the ceremony , usually by high profile and VIP personalities , which helps to raise the profile and create awareness of the event and it’s purpose.

The ceremony’s main goal is to help monitor each individual gorilla and their groups in their natural habitat. It was created as a means of bringing attention both locally and internationally about the importance of protecting the mountain gorillas and their habitats in the Virunga Mountains in the north of the country.

Traditional Rwandan drummers are usually part of the celebrations

The ceremony will take place on the 5th of September 2015, in Volcanoes National park Musanze District, Northern Province. Park guides suggest names for all young gorillas born in the past year, generally based on observed behavior and characteristics. The naming is accompanied by traditional music and dance and the event helps to raise funds for conservation. You can even “adopt” the gorilla of your choice.
