Discovering Kibuye

written by muka

Remarkable Rwanda: Rwanda has several hidden gems that are yet to be discovered by regular tourists,one of them being Kibuye, Described as ‘An Outstanding Experience’, ‘A wonderful paradise’ and ‘A serene home away from home’, on TripAdviser, Kibuye is a must-do for the discerning traveler yearning for a relaxing experience ,after or before a safari trip or even as the main activity on your trip to Rwanda.

Kibuye is a city in Karongi district, and the capital of Western Province in Rwanda. The city lies on the eastern shore of Lake Kivu, about halfway down, and between Gisenyi and Cyangugu.

We recently took a trip there to find out why so many people were raving on about it, and we are happy to say that it exceeded our expectations!

Before we left Kigali , we decided the best way to tour around Kibuye and the lake would be by boat, We then arranged and booked with the Iliza house boat, Although the boat provides overnight cruises within the Kibuye region and to anyway else the captain can anchor,We decided to opt for a day cruise around the lake,

The beautiful boat which can sleep eight, and hold fifteen people at any one time , is exceptionally neat , spacious and ridiculously good fun, local drinks were offered to us during the cruise and in the evening, a barbecue dinner was served on the upper deck with a beautiful scenic night view of Kibuye.

In Kibuye, hotels range from budget to high end, so there is something for everyone, ask for a room with a view! you will not regret it ,(for high end, we recommend the Cormoran Lodge).

The lake is safe to swim in, free from crocodiles , hippos and the usual worry about methane gas (it is trapped below 260 metres and very far from the shore.

You can enjoy water sports in Kibuye, kayaking, wind surfing, catamaran and jet-skiing. The equipment can be hired at Kivu Serena in Gisenyi. Kayaks can also be hired in Moriah Hills in Kibuye.

During the day, you can visit Nyiragongo Volcano – the world largest lava lake whereby you can;
-Hike on the Niyragongo Volcano (1500 m of denivellation)
-Camp in the bandas at the top (3500 m) and admire the lava lake
The smoke from the volcano during the day and its glow at night can be observed in Gisenyi, Kibuye and as far as Nyungwe Forest.

Please drop us a line if you would like to visit , or if you have already visited and would like to share your experiences, we would love to hear from you.
